The world’s longest wind turbine blade, LM 107m blade, has been certified by TUV NORD after two years’ of work. This blade will be installed on GE Haliade X 13MWffshore wind turbine.

The blade test was completed in the wind technology test center in Boston, USA and ORE Catapult factory in Bryce, UK. The blade passed static test, fatigue test and post fatigue test.

Both blades used for test were produced at the Cherbourg plant in France. It is reported that GE has won nearly 3.7GW offshore wind turbine orders in the United States and the United Kingdom with Hliade X offshore wind turbines.

As the 107m blade is too long, the door of the ORE Catapult test center can only be closed by cutting off the tip of the blade.

Tony Quinn, director of testing and validation of ORE Catapult, said the LM 107m blade was certified as a component after being subjected to extremely high loads(50% higher than previous tests) in laboratory conditions.

LM 107m blade is the longest blade in the world at present, and GE is also designing longer blades. At the same time, the other two major offshore wind power giants are also working on long blades. Siemens Gamesa’s 14MW offshore wind turbine will use 108m blades; Vestas will recently launch a new 10 + MW offshore wind turbine with similar blade size.
